Graduate Typography, CMU Fall 07
This was a typographic study into the creation of a series of three John Cage book covers. We were constrained by the use of only three weights of one type face, and a choice of three colors.
This was my first real exploration into strictly typography, so a lot of lessons were learned. Besides learning about hierarchy, color, typographic systems, and all the good type stuff, the biggest thing I learned was to let myself step out of my comfort zone and to explore and use methods I would never have thought of doing. For example, for our third book cover we were encouraged to listen to a piece of John Cage's music, and literally paint what we thought the music sounded like. This served as my inspiration for the third book cover. Being exposed to these types of methods have allowed me to start thinking outside the box for all my projects, typography or otherwise.
